The citizen-soldiers who fought for the Confederacy personified
the best qualities of America. The preservation of liberty and freedom was the
motivating factor in the South's decision to fight the Second American
Revolution. The tenacity with which Confederate soldiers fought underscored
their belief in the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. These attributes are
the underpinning of our democratic society and represent the foundation on
which this nation was built.
Since 1913, the Confederate Veterans Monument in Fort Payne,
Alabama has stood as a memorial to these brave men and a testament to the high
regard and affection in which they were held by their sons and daughters and
the grateful citizens of DeKalb County.
The monument, a gift to the city from the Sons of Confederate Veterans
and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, was funded by public
donations. The monument stands in the
corner of Fort Payne City Park and is in desperate need of renovation.
After 100 years, the SCV and UDC are once again asking the
people of the South to honor our Confederate veterans by donating to the
Friends of the Confederate Monument project.
Project plans include cleaning, repair, lighting, and landscaping. As part of the memorial, commemorative
bricks engraved with the name of a confederate soldier will be embedded in a
field of pavers within the raised base of the monument.
If you have Confederate ancestors, or would like to honor a
Confederate soldier who has no one else to remember him, please consider
purchasing one, or more, of these commemorative bricks. The bricks are 4” x 8” and will be
laser-engraved with the name of the soldier and his unit. The text will be on 2 or 3 lines with up to
20 letters/spaces per line. We will add
the bricks to the base of the monument for a donation of $50 per brick. Any profits from brick sales will be used in
the renovation of the monument.
