worthwhile Island project! The town and the planning board has
approved this project. As you know the quality of all of our lives on
the Island is a function of so many variables. The beauty and all the
recreational activities the lake brings to the island. The sense of
community we have and how Islanders help each other especially when they
need help. Another factor is all the diverse activities the island
offers each family. The golf course, the tennis courts, the trails,
biking, the ball field the community center and its playground. For all
of these reasons we call this our home!
The initial sponsors of this project saw this as an Island project not a golf course project. Certainly for those who play golf now, the addition of a driving range and practice putting green will be a big plus. What we saw in this Island project was two-fold.
First and foremost it was an excellent project for youth of all ages on our Island. It would give them a great place to go and have some fun. Hitting balls and putting could be great fun without the cost of a golf membership. Children of all ages could come up and learn about the game. We are hoping we can find a way to conduct group golf lessons for children in various age groups. It would be a great place that they could also go to and have a hot dog and an ice cream float after enjoying the range and putting green. The range and the practice putting green could be incorporated into the summer youth recreation programs. While our course operation has been financially sound it needs to be sustainable in the years and decades to come. Exposing our youth to the game will help insure we continue to have new members. The average age of our golf membership continues to climb. We need to expose new families to all the golf course has to offer. This project should help doing that.
Second as stated above the more quality attractions we have on this island we all call home the better our quality of our lives and our children’s and grandchildren’s lives will be. This project will continue to promote community and will give us all more chances to meet new people and more of our neighbors. There are many on the island who have told us they do not have an interest in golf but would go up and hit some balls a enjoy putting on a golf green. This would make everything about our golf operation more vibrant.

The Golf Range, the Practice Putting Green and the Outdoor Living and Entertainment area will be a great place for all Islanders to enjoy and will promote the long term viability of the golf course and club and as a premiere place for island social events. It will be a place for Islanders to improve their game, provide a real place for golf lessons, will be a real attraction for those looking for something to do who are not golfers, will be a means to keep practice sessions off the course and will provide ancillary income to the golf club for driving range ball sales and more golf club food and beverage sales. It will help insure the sustainability of the financial viability of the golf club and course and its membership for decades to come.
Most importantly, for all who have been planning this project, it will be a great place for the youth on our island to learn the game and have some fun. It will be a great place for them to spend quality recreation time and more young golfers, woman golfers and their families will insure the long term viability of the Golf Club. A professionally done virtual reality video was donated by a landscape design and construction firm showing in detail how special and unique the backyard of the clubhouse area could become! Please take a look! This is our ultimate goal and vision of what the backyard area of the clubhouse could become for club members and most of all for all islanders and their children! Many islanders who have viewed the video have told us that with a recreational facility like this they would consider joining the club. Some people asked about social memberships. Children who saw this video became excited about the range the putting green and how much fun daytime and evening family activities at the club might be. The video shows what the backyard space could look like during the day and then at night. I hope it will inspire all islanders to see what progress we made in 2016 when they return to the island in 2017. The driving range has been cleared and seeded. In the spring we will complete the range and begin the practice putting green portion of our project.
The island season is now over and we are asking all islanders now to support our commemorative brick fund raising campaign. This fundraising initiative will commence around Thanksgiving time and will run through the Spring of 2017. This fundraising project should insure the completion of the first two phases of the project being the driving range and the practice putting green as well as lay the groundwork for the third phase of our project being the outdoor living and entertainment area. During the winter and spring we will plan a commemorative memory walk using the bricks purchased in this program. The walk or commemorative area be professionally planned and installed. So please consider recognizing family members, friends, colleagues, business partners or other special people in your lives. What a great everlasting gift this could be for the holidays. So please support our program. We are hoping to sell at least 400 bricks for our commemorative walkway behind the Golf Club.
