Set in a captivating lakefront locale, amidst
verdant hills and spectacular vistas, the Village of Greenwood Lake Centennial
Park is designed to represent the culmination of the village's 2024 Centennial celebration, reflecting its unique and remarkable history as the vacation spot
of choice for the elite and working classes, and cherished home for generations
of families who built a resilient, civic-minded community.
The park is situated steps away from the former
Windermere landing that welcomed visitors from nearby cities who were
transported, by steamboats and private launches, from the Sterling Forest
Railroad Station to the many majestic hotels that dotted the lake's shores.
Among those seeking a respite from the heat,
congestion and din of the cities were many celebrities, including stars of
stage and screen, vaudevillians, heads of state, inventors and major sports
figures including prominent boxers who trained for major bouts at the lake.
Names of some of these individuals who had a
major impact on Greenwood lake's history, such as Babe Ruth and Joe Louis, as
well as some of its historic places, such as Chapel Island, will be engraved on
pavers on the distinctive walkways that are the major design element of the
Centennial Park which will, no doubt, attract visitors for years to come, as
well as promoting Greenwood lake's fascinating history which continues to the
present day.
Current and former "lakers" and
