The first embodiment of the Lynchburg Police Department was a
“Watch” or Patrol officer in 1805 when Lynchburg was first incorporated as a
town. As Lynchburg grew more prosperous and became a trading hub via canals and
railroads, the Common Council saw the need for a Night Watch. The Night
Watch consisted of seven men who protected the entire town.
To honor these early pioneers in the history of Lynchburg law
enforcement, the Lynchburg Police Foundation is offering individuals that
contribute $1,000 to kick-off our campaign and become one of our “First Watch”
donors. These special donors will be recognized with an 8x8-inch brick paver
located in a reserved area of the Memorial Plaza. The brick pavers will
surround an engraved replica of the early Lynchburg Police Badge.
