Historic African American School Marks 132nd
Anniversary
with $800K Fundraising Campaign
September
2022 marked the 132nd anniversary of the opening of the Harrison School in
Tipton, Missouri. Harrison School opened its door in September 1890, as the
first publicly funded school built specifically for the education of African
American students in Tipton. It provided educational instruction
from 1890 to 1957. The building still stands as not only a local treasure, but
it is also a national treasure. In February 2021, the school was placed on the
National Park Services’ Register of National Historic Places through the
efforts of the Opportunity 1888 Foundation.

Harrison School’s 134th anniversary (2024).
