Sumter
Museum will soon be breaking ground on a state-of-the-art 36,000 sq foot
facility that is set to open in 2026. This will expand the museum’s campus
that currently includes the Williams Brice House, Heritage Education Center,
Carolina Backcountry Homestead, and Temple Sinai Jewish History Center.
The
building will house a large military museum thanks to the esteemed private
collection of military historian Sammy Way along with local history exhibits
and a section on local artist Grainger McKoy. With this, we are excited
to announce the official launch of its capital fundraising campaign,
"Build a Home for History - Where Sumter's Past and Future Meet."
This dynamic campaign invites local stakeholders and the entire community to
play an integral role in preserving Sumter's rich history by helping us create
this dedicated space where the stories, artifacts, and people of Sumter's past
can find a permanent and fitting home. The "Build a Home for History"
campaign is not merely about constructing a building; it is about constructing
a strong and lasting home for Sumter's history. It represents the Sumter
Museum's unwavering commitment to keep the history of Sumter vibrant,
accessible, and relevant to future generations.
