The West End Commons Project
The Friends of the West End Commons is a nonprofit, volunteer organization whose mission is to reconstruct the northwestern corner of the Lamar/Pacific intersection into an attractive and safe public space for the neighborhood.
Once complete, the result will be a new gateway into the West End at its closest entrance to the downtown core. It will be a spot for residents, workers, and tourists to gather and relax or enjoy a meal or a performance by a local busker. It will reduce crime, improve public perception, increase property values, and reduce vacancy rates nearby. Lastly, through the inclusion of a memorial for the July 7th, 2016 shooting, it will help Dallas heal and find common ground between all its residents.
The sale of engraved pavers is the first major fundraising effort for the Commons. The goal is to raise $20,000, which will pay for the removal of the existing concrete sidewalk and its replacement with engraved and blank pavers. Any funds raised above and beyond our goal will pay for additional site work, most likely the irrigation system needed by the planters. The engraved pavers will be placed within the circular area defined by the planters, which will be the major activity area at the Commons. That way the engraved pavers will receive maximum visibility. The completion of the new surface at the Commons will be a major step towards the total construction cost of $250,000.
Ultimately, once all portions of the project are completed, the result will be the West End's first real public space: a place that is transformed from the neighborhood's worst problem to one of its biggest assets. We appreciate your support of this goal!
